CP Unlimited Uses Innovative Ideas To Maintain Staff From Near And Far

In recent years, staffing shortages across the Hudson Valley—and specifically amongst the wide field of service providers to vulnerable populations—have created an environment where there simply aren’t enough people to fill all of the necessary positions.

We speak with new Direct Support Professionals at CP Unlimited's Hudson Valley Division from across the world on their journey to both the United States and the agency.

A person who requires 24-hour care, for instance, will need three people working in eight-hour shifts to cover their day. If one of those three caretakers does not show, the ripple extends outwards to many others. That’s why for an agency like Constructive Partnerships (CP) Unlimited that cares for many dozens of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities throughout Putnam and Dutchess counties, innovative thinking is needed to maintain top-level care.

In response to the staffing issues, CP Unlimited has launched a new program to recruit qualified and interested individuals from nearby and around the world to join the organization. And in just six months, the results are paying off.

Already several new direct-care and rehabilitation staff members hailing from Lagos, Nigeria have received their H-1B Visas and are working in residential care settings in the Hudson Valley. New staff has also come from Jamaica and the Philippines. Diversifying its workforce, CP Unlimited has more than a dozen additional workers in the pipeline who are expected to join the staff over the coming months.

Each individual comes to the US with a four-year degree and experience working in healthcare environments, ready to learn and be of service to our neighbors with disabilities.

"I love to teach people,” said Paula Harris-Forbes, Rehabilitation Counselor. “I see life as a classroom."

That thought was echoed by Aniebiefabasi Ubom.

“I want to serve people,” Ubom added. “The working environment here allows me to express my abilities… everybody has a goal to achieve.”
